Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a procedure aimed at helping to reduce droopy eyes. Droopy eyes often come as a result of age, when eyelids are stretched and the muscles in the area begin to weaken and fat bulges appear. Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic or cosmetic surgery that removes wrinkles and that ‘droopy’ appearance by eliminating the excess fat in the area. This procedure can work on both the upper and lower lids.

The purpose of the procedure is to give the patient a more relaxed appearance, opening the eyes a little further. While it can help give a more youthful appearance, it is not an effective method of eliminating dark circles, drooping eyebrows or crow’s feet.

Eligible candidates

Candidates who are eligible for blepharoplasty should be in good physical health. Generally, most patients who opt for this surgery are over the age of 35, but there are some instances where people enquire about the surgery earlier.

The procedure

Usually this procedure is performed under local anesthesia, however general anesthetic can be used if you prefer. The procedure begins with small incisions being made in the crease of the upper lid and beneath the lashes of the lower lid. Excess skin and fat can then be removed from the area. Stitches can be removed within a week and patients will often return to usual activities with around 10 days.

Risks

There are some risks associated with the surgery. Some are permanent while some only last temporarily.

  • Anesthesia reaction
  • Infection
  • Difficulty closing eyes during sleep
  • Whiteheads
  • Swelling
  • Blurred or double vision
